A healthy teacher-student relationship can bring about good performance from students. I remember when I was in school, I used to like my English teacher and used to acquire good scores in English. A healthy teacher-student relationship is necessary by which the students feel confident to share their problems with the teacher. It can create a better learning experience for the students. It also ensures a smooth regulation of the learning environment.

Now, how to build a healthy relationship with students? Have you ever thought about constructing a good relationship with your students? Being a teacher, you have to also try to understand a students’ perspective. All students won’t be the same. You have to manage to tackle each student in your class. By building a healthy relationship with them, you gain their trust and you can change them into a better person. Let’s see a few ways by which you can improve your relationship with students fruitfully.

  1. Interact with your students: As we all know, in schools, usually a parents-teachers meeting is conducted to discuss the performance of students with their parents. Teachers also discuss the performance of students with their colleagues. What if you discuss with the student itself without judging or blaming them? Don’t you think it can create a trustworthy relationship with you and the student? Being interactive with a student also lets you get to know their problems and their area of interest. If you know their area of interest, you can encourage them to concentrate more on the topic and let them achieve success.
  2. Encourage classroom discussions: I remember my teachers used to assign a few topics to us to take a class about it. This made us discover more about the topic and be a star in the class. We used to research everything related to that particular topic and discuss it in the class. This method adopted by our teachers encouraged us to get involved in the class and learn more about the topics. Being a student, we used to enjoy it, because we could be the center of attention at that time. We used to interact more with our teachers and get their help and guidance in accomplishing the task. This also made us build a healthy relationship with the teachers. So, I feel this method works. Let you be one among the students and your student to be the teacher.
  3. Support them in focusing on extracurricular activities: Academics not only means learning about different subjects. It also includes extracurricular activities. A good teacher should also encourage their students to participate in extracurricular activities. You can help them in their practice or go and watch them perform. All of this will encourage them and let them entrust you. They would always love to have a teacher who can talk to them as a friend, who will support them in facing challenges and give them the confidence to achieve success. You can go and watch them perform in a cricket or football match or an art fest.
  4. Maintain contacts with their parents: It is important to maintain contact with their parents to know how a student behaves outside the school. You can get to know more about them and correct them if there are any shortfalls. You can also advise parents to encourage their children in both studies and extracurricular activities in a healthy way. Discuss not only the negatives but also the positives of a student with their parents. It is better to once in a while visit the community a student belongs to, to get a first-hand view of his/her life outside the learning environment.
  5. Give assignments to students that allow them to share their experience and interests: You can assign various tasks to your students to let them discover the problems faced by people in their community. For example, you can give the assignment to conduct a survey in their community regarding community health. This will let them know more about the people in their community, interact with them, experience how to perform a survey, and to present it in the class. This will build confidence in a student and make him/her capable of performing such social activities. You can also give them topics related to their family or their area of interest to discuss with the class. This also helps to make them active and cheerful.

A teacher plays a major role in bringing out the best in a student. Remember you can be a role model to students, guide them to achieve success, encourage them to work on their talents, and shape a good human being. I guess these steps will help you build a healthy relationship with your students and give them the best learning experience.
