Most of our young generation, until schooling, will be growing with their parents. All their needs will be taken care of by parents. The only responsibility of students is to study well. But after completing intermediate, few may have to stay away from home to pursue higher studies in their field of interest. There they face certain difficulties since it’s a new place, they have to handle everything alone, meet new people.

The few problems our students may have to deal with are;

  1. Home Sickness - In a few students, it starts a few weeks before leaving home. They feel mild depression and anxiety due to the change going to happen in their life. Few students overcome this quickly while some take time. Some students happen to feel homesick a while after the class commences. A person with homesickness will have a lack of interest and involvement in new surroundings, low energy, trouble sleeping, an increase/decrease in appetite, etc.

Tips to overcome - Stay in constant touch with your old friends but also make yourself available for new friends. Have proper food and sleep. Make contacts and friends through shared activities. Give yourself time to adjust. Organize your time well. If nothing works and you continue to stay inactive, get help from a college counselor.

  1. Difficulty Sleeping - Students tend to lose sleep because of the workload. They may have assignments and projects to submit or topics to study. This induces a change in the normal sleep pattern of 8 hours. It has no other remedy than to manage to get 8 hours of sleep.

Tips to overcome - Try to maintain a regular sleep routine. Avoid naps. Use a relaxation exercise before going to bed. Try to reduce the consumption of food and water in the night. Avoid caffeinated drinks after 5 pm.

  1. Anxiety - It is a result of the stressful situations we undergo regularly. It is common in students. In some, it happens at the time of exams. Students tend to feel nervous, sweating, difficulty concentrating, etc.

Tips to overcome - Get enough sleep. Exercise every day. Reduce caffeine use. Study the topics on a daily basis and revise regularly. Maintain positive thoughts.

  1. Stress Management - If you feel something is making your body and mind to work faster, it means you are under stress. Stress may leave you with negativity and unproductive feelings.

Tips to overcome - Practice meditation or yoga. Give yourself a peaceful atmosphere. Take strategic study breaks.

  1. Social Anxiety - People are different. Some are extroverts while others are introverts. Few students tend to make friends and connections easily though it’s a new environment for them. But few can be seen isolated and left alone. They don’t participate in any activities or social gatherings.

Tips to overcome - Maintain a smile on your face always. Greet your classmates or college mates when you meet them. Initiate conversation. Volunteer in case someone needs help. Try to be present in social activities or functions.
